Anonymous

So the worldwide internet hacking group, Anonymous, is threatening to shut down Facebook on January 28th.  For those of you who don’t know who Anonymous is, or why this would be a big deal, then need not look any further because the JAM has you covered.  So this was first covered by Mashable yesterday evening and seems to be another serious threat by the underground organization which has already hacked the Syrian Ministry of Defense website, various child pornography sites, a company that specializes in online security (ironic), CBS, and Universal Music.  They even hit the the Justice Dept’s website after they shut down Mega-upload’s website this past Friday.  I have actually used Mega-upload many times for sharing music with my friends (I hope that no one reads this blog, or I go to jail)    (JK).

So now Anonymous is threatening to shutdown Facebook on January 28th for what seems to be a privacy and online cyber war issues.  They claim that Facebook is like the U.S. Government and is one of the largest sites in the world, but can still be taken down.  Most of this online cybar war has been brought on by Congress and SOPA, which stands for Stop Online Piracy Act.  This is the bill intended to allow copyright holders to seek court orders against websites  sharing information and content  illegally.   The original article on Mashable gives a better description for what is intended by Anonymous.

What makes this story even weirder is that Anonymous is completely underground and no-one knows who is responsible for all these attacks.  Yet you can still be part of any Anonymous cyber attack by simply downloading a link at a certain time. (also explained in the article).  Also making this story fishy is the fact that the twitter handle associated with Anonymous rejects these claims stating, “Update, 2:10 p.m. PT: A tweet from the AnonOps Twitter account denies that this video has anything to do with Anonymous: “Again we must say that we will not attack #Facebook! Again the mass media lie.”

All I have to say is that Anonymous is gnarly.  I mean they just appear out of the blue via social networks, claim shit is not tight with the world, and attack websites.  What happens if Facebook is down for a day? or two?  Then millions of American’s will have no clue what to do on the internet.   You should just be on the JAM anyway.  Plain and simple – these guys are awesome.  Just sticking it to the man anyway they can.

That’s the educational JAM.  Don’t get caught.
